Deep in Podgórze - the historic district on the southern bank of the Wisła River, Bonarka is home to 91,000 square metres of retail space with about 230 shops, including large spaces for Auchan, Leroy Merlin, Media Expert, and Smyk Megastore, dozens of fashion outfitters (Zara, TK Maxx, H&M, Peek & Cloppenburg), cosmetics specialists and revered jewellers, plus over 20 restaurants and cafes, the largest cinema complex in the city and 3,200 free parking spaces. Built on the site of a late-19th century cement factory turned post-WWII chemical plant (which finally closed in 2003), the modern design features a fountain and glass ceiling, while retaining the original factory smokestack. To reach this commercial Xanadu, take buses 144, 169, 173, 174, 179 or 469 getting off at the 'Bonarka' stop; or buses 164 or 610 getting off at 'Puszkarska.' Note that Auchan and Leroy Merlin open earlier than the rest of the shopping centre.
