What to See & Do in Żagań, Poland

share
Equidistant from major cities Wrocław (160km away) and Poznań (170km away), and less than an hour's drive south from Zielona Góra, Żagań (German: Sagan) is an interesting little town, remarkable in modern times as the site of one of the most celebrated prison breakouts ever, dubbed 'The Great Escape.' Today the WWII Nazi prison camp where it took place - Stalag Luft III - is home to the Prisoner of War Camps Museum and open to the public for tours. In addition to its star attraction, however, the modest Lubuskie town harbours several other points of interest, including a charming Old Town full of handsome architecture and public squares, several palaces and the historic Augustinian Monastery complex. Żagań is also a military town, hosting the Polish 11th Armoured Cavalry Division, and an American Armoured Brigade Combat Team is also constantly rotated through the town under Operation Atlantic Resolve.
