Brasov

White & Black Towers

Aleea Dupa Ziduri     more than a year ago
Two small towers keep watch over old Brasov from the Warthe hill on the northern side of the city: the so-called White and Black towers. While not identical (the white tower, above, is much larger) - were nevertheless built at the same time, late in the 15th century.

The White Tower (Turnul Alb) is located directly above the Bastionul Graft, and you can climb up to it via some very steep steps – do not try it unless you are feeling extremely fit and agile. There are more steps when you actually get to the tower, but the views from the top are fantastic.

Further along the path that runs alongside the old city wall and the canal (yes, it is a canal) is an old blue sign pointing the way to the Black Tower (Turnul Negru). You will notice immediately that the Black Tower (which you can see by glancing up to your right) is in fact very much white. A steep path (but no steps) leads up to it. The deck in front of it is a great location for photos of old Brasov. The tower picked up its name after a fire in 1649 blackened the exterior walls.
