Picture the scene: you wake up early, put the coffee on the pot and saunter out to the balcony to survey the landscape. An almost endless green plays out before your eyes, punctuated by lush forests and the serene sounds of nature. Peace and tranquillity takes on a whole new meaning, and the coffee that has just boiled is accentuated by breakfast consisting of home-grown products and freshly baked bread.
That sounds pretty nice, right? Slovenia’s countryside receives plaudits from all corners, and that very same countryside just happens to be dotted with tourist farms just waiting to be discovered by those looking for the most relaxing of stays. Where better to sample traditional homemade food than in this most traditional of settings? The number of farms is growing all the time, covering the length and breadth of the country, and the vast majority are surrounded by readymade hiking and cycling routes allowing the visitor to truly experience the beauty of Slovenia’s nature.
Many still function as working farms, adding an extra element of tradition to an already perfectly old-fashioned stay. So leave the city behind and immerse yourself in country living. For a list of some of our favourite tourist farms, follow the various regional links on our site (Bled, the Heart of Slovenia or Laško, to name just three). Look out for the official red apple logo stamp of approval, and be careful with the schnapps. Homemade is always better, but homemade is always stronger. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!
