These more than 120 stone pillars located in the village of Kuklica some 50km east of Kumanovo have been perplexing and beguiling the locals since they were first formed over 100,000 years ago. Petrified soldiers or a doomed wedding party according to local legend, the more prosaic reason for their existence is really just down to the weather and the process of erosion. Stunningly beautiful, a visit to see and wander among them is one of the highlights of any visit to the region. To get there take the main highway east from Kumanovo, take a right immediately after the small village of Stratsin and keep an eye out for the signs.
