West Berlin's 2000-seat opera building with its excellent acoustics hosts superb musical and theatrical performances. Originally opened in 1912 as the modern, 'democratic' counterpart to the royal opera house on Unter den Linden, it has a reputation for modern works and underrepresented composers. Donald Runnicles is the principal conductor. Note that you can now take guided tours of the opear building most Saturdays at 15:30. The tours cost just €5. Check dates and book places (which are limited) at the opera's website.
