Johannesburg

The Station

  Carr St, Newtown      +27 73 588 9513     18 Jan 2024
Once Johannesburg's first railway station, this beautiful, elaborate iron-framed structure dates back to 1896 and served passengers until closing in 1951 to make way for a more modern edifice, Park Station. Of great heritage significance, Old Park Station was active throughout the wars that raged across the area in the late 1800s and the early part of the next century. In its time it saw the transport of soldiers, horses, weapons, and goods.

After the station was closed, the structure was dismantled and then reassembled at another location. In
1993 it was brought to the concrete podium south of the railway lines in the north of Newtown. The current location is around one kilometre from where the old station originally stood in the Johannesburg city centre.

Aside from the unique and gritty sense of history that the space enjoys, it is also endowed with great views over the city and is hired out as a venue for pop-up markets, concerts and festivals.
