Cardiff is an energetic city, and its standing as the capital of Wales ensures a packed schedule of events from January through to December. Sport and music rule the roost, so get ready for plenty of trips to the Millennium (sorry, the Principality Stadium).
Six Nations Rugby
It doesn’t get any bigger than this. Every February and March, the top rugby nations of Europe (and Italy) take part in the greatest sporting championship on Earth, with pride and northern supremacy at stake. Rugby is the national religion of the Welsh, so to say this is the big event is an understatement. A rugby night in Cardiff is one of the world’s great sporting experiences.
Tafwyl Fair
The Welsh language is very much alive and kicking, and this annual June festival celebrates the use of the tongue in the capital city. This is about as Welsh as it gets.
International Food & Drink Festival
From Welsh language to international cuisine. Held every July since 1999, hundreds of thousands of people descend upon the Bay to taste the flavours of the world, with live music and workshops to bulk it all out.
Welsh Proms
A celebration of high culture, the Welsh Proms is the country’s national classical music festival. It takes place every July and seems to expand exponentially every single year.
Pride Cymru
Now an integral part of Cardiff’s event calendar, Pride Cymru takes place over a weekend in August, and ticks all the boxes you’d expect from a Pride festival.
Open Air Theatre Festival
It does exactly what it says on the tin. An open air theatre festival, this mass of joy usually runs from the end of June to the beginning of August.
Sparks in the Park
Firework displays might not be quite as popular and awe-inspiring as they were when we were kids, but Cardiff’s Sparks in the Park is a whole heap of fun with plenty of bangers throughout.
Half Marathon
We’re still no closer to beginning our training for anything approaching a mild jog, but Cardiff’s half marathon has grown into one of the largest road races in Europe. It takes place every October.
RHS Flower Show.
Are you a flower aficionado? Know your magnolias from your marigolds? The RHS Flower Show in Cardiff is the first major flower show of the year, kicking the season off in style.
Winter Wonderland
Much like every other city in the northern hemisphere, Cardiff embraces all things Christmas once December arrives. If you’re into traditional markets, warm drinks and masses of food, Winter Wonderland will be right up your street.
