The 2024 Seaside Restaurant bucket list

20 May 2024

There are so many fantastic restaurants on the Croatian coast that knowing where to start can be challenging. To help, we’ve picked out five brilliant spots in five beautiful cities.

Mlin Montanari, Šibenik

Šibenik is one of Croatia’s great food cities, and Mlin Montanari is an integral part of that heritage. It traces its history back to 1850 and the first steam mill in Dalmatia, owned by Giovanni Montanari, a mill that was the largest industrial facility in town at the time. Today, it houses a marvellous restaurant of artistically plated regional classics and fantastic wine. History and delicious food make for a fabulous combination.

Kiosk Dubrovnik, Dubrovnik

Open only during the summer, Kiosk straddles the line between informal eats and fine dining with all the experience of a veteran and the enthusiasm of a prodigy. Using local ingredients and international techniques, the food is fantastic, including poke bowls, ramen, tostadas, and more. Global fusion street food is increasingly common, but few do it as well as Kiosk.

Labrax Fish & Wine, Zadar

Delicious fish in the heart of Zadar’s old town; what’s not to love? Labrax eschews gimmickry in favour of good food and good people, reminding diners of what life is about. The day’s catch is given all the attention it deserves, cooked with love and tenderness before being devoured by hungry diners. If that sounds contradictory, just pour another glass of Dalmatian wine and go with the flow. Food is about joy, and Labrax has plenty to spare.

Kavana Grad, Rijeka

Rijeka’s Kavana Grad is many things to many people, and it all depends on what you want. Are you looking for a friendly spot for a social coffee? The beans are fabulous, so you are in luck. However, we are particularly enamoured with its ambitious new food menu, a fish-focused selection that embraces Rijeka’s location and breathes new life into its famous flavours. As expected, the wine list is excellent.

Bòme, Split

We live in wonderful times, where gourmet food is readily available in relaxed settings, and nowhere in Split does this better than Bòme. This gorgeous restaurant in Trstenik hits all the right spots, serving delectably photogenic dishes that somehow manage to taste better than they look. The menu makes the most of local ingredients (everything is seasonal) and dishes are paired with the perfect wine, even down to the date of the ingredients used. Your new favourite restaurant in Split? Look no further than Bòme.
