Temple of Jupiter

Standing as a monumental gateway between the Al-Hamidiyah Souq and the Umayyad Mosque, the ruins of the Temple of Jupiter recall the city's Roman legacy like nothing else. Originally built during the reign of Augustus, this massive sanctuary was designed to honour the god of the sky and lightning on a site that has been sacred for over 3,000 years. Visitors can still walk beneath the towering Corinthian columns of the western propylaeum, which once formed the outer enclosure of the largest temple in Roman Syria. Go up to the first floor of the Kahwaji family's 'Old Bazaar' antique shop for a better view of the columns.
