"Martyrs' Square" serves as a central landmark and the historic gateway to the modern, Ottoman-era administrative heart of Damascus, named in honour of the Syrian and Lebanese nationalists executed there in 1916 by the Ottomans for their opposition to imperial rule. At its centre, the quirky bronze Telegraph Monument was erected in 1905 to commemorate the first telecommunications link between Damascus and Medina. This bustling area has functioned as a site for public gatherings and administrative life, surrounded by grand buildings from the Ottoman and French Mandate eras. Today, it remains a major transit point and a lively commercial area.
