Rheinfall (Rhine Falls) - Europe's tallest waterfall

A trip to Europe’s tallest waterfall Rheinfall (Rhine Falls) makes for a great day out. Close to the city of Schaffhausen the water of the River Rhine plunges down an impressive 23 metres at a width of more than 150 metres. Two castles or schlösser watch over the waterfall: Schloss Laufen overlooks the top of the falls, Schlössli Wörth is situated at the bottom. A frequent train connection from Lucerne, with a change in Zurich (take the S9 train) gets you to Neuhausen Rheinfall in just under two hours. After a short walk from the station you'll arrive at the bottom of the falls. From here, you can take a boat over to the visitor centre (3/2Sfr) or to the rock in the middle of the waterfall (April - Oct, every 10 minutes from 10:00 - 18:00 for 20/15Sfr; in April and October 11:00 - 17:00). Stairs lead up the rock where you're afforded a fantastic view of the falls, spray included. The visitor centre features an exhibition about the history of the Rhine Falls (5/3Sfr including access to the viewing platform). On both sides of the river there are paths with lookout platforms and restaurants, so take some time for a stroll. An adventure park is located on the northern side of the falls, where you can climb on ropes fastened between trees (open 10:00 - 19:00, 40/32/16Sfr, summer only).
