Drink Like a Local in Stockholm

more than a year ago
Visiting the Swedish capital is all about immersing yourself in the local culture - and it means exploring Stockholm’s food and drink scene and doing as the locals do. When it comes to drinking, Stockholmers seem to love their Swedish Punsch, Aquavit, Absolut Vodka, and other spirits. They also tend to warm up with a glass of Glögg during the winter months. They even love their light beer, so you should not call it watered-down since you may be seen as disrespectful and rude! The range of drinking spots in the city is carved up by its island structure: Gamla Stan is home to various atmospheric bars; Östermalm’s exclusive bars and nightclubs attract the city’s sort of rich and famous; and Södermalm is, without a doubt, the social epicentre for many Stockholmers. In short, you are spoilt for choice with the selection of bars and nightclubs on offer. All the restaurants, bars and nightclubs in the city serve alcoholic beverages. But, buying alcohol in Stockholm is not that simple. Gas stations, supermarkets and convenience stores are forbidden to sell anything other than low-alcohol beer. So, if you want to buy liquor, wine or anything other than light beer, you can do it at only one place: a state-run chain of liquor stores called Systembolaget (Systemet.) Just do not forget to bring an ID and get there before 6 PM because they close early!
