Málaga is a city of celebration with colourful festivals taking place all year round, covering everything from religious observations to more modern manifestations. The Málaga calendar is a full one, but these are the events to make a point of attending.
THREE KINGS FESTIVAL
Málaga takes the Epiphany very seriously, and the Three Kings Festival takes over the city centre on January 5 and 6. It all begins at the port, where the Kings arrive and begin their procession through the city.
MALAGA CARNIVAL
Málaga is a colourful city all year round, but it really does go whole hog once carnival comes to town. The carnival gods get everything underway before the fun begins, with masses of events and celebrations throughout the week.
SEMANTA SANTA
It doesn’t get much bigger than Holy Week. This is one of the most important festivals in the city and region as a whole, a week of joyful parades commemorating the eventful final days of Jesus Christ himself.
MALAGA GASTRONOMY FESTIVAL
A major event on the culinary calendar, Málaga Gastronomy Festival is a gastronomic get-together like no other. Plaza de le Marina is the usual centre, but the festival’s presence can be felt in restaurants all across town.
NOCHE EN BLANCO
Culture vultures, this one’s for you. On one special night in May, the whole city gets ready for a night of art in its many forms, with one handy catch — everything is 100% free. Don’t try to do everything (you won’t be able to do), but do embrace whatever you come across.
MALAGA FILM FESTIVAL
An integral part of the spring calendar in Málaga, the city’s film festival is a joyful embrace of Spanish cinema. 2020 will be the 23rd year of the festival.
MALAGA FAIR
Spring has the carnival, summer has the fair. Málaga Fair (Málaga Feria) is the biggest summer shindig in southern Europe, which is a massive claim. We don’t disagree.
MALAGA FLAMENCO FESTIVAL
Have you even visited Andalusia if you didn’t check out some flamenco? The answer is an obvious no, so why not organise your visit around the summertime Flamenco Festival?
PICASSO MONTH
Pablo Picasso is Málaga’s favourite son, and almost the entire month of October is given over to celebrating the life and work of this famous artist. October 25 is the big day.
CHRISTMAS
Winter doesn’t really exist in Málaga but Christmas remains a big deal. The usual celebrations take place, but it is the city’s christmas lights that really take the cake.
