Rise '76: The Story of June 16th
Perfectly timed for the 50th anniversary of the Soweto Uprising, Rise '76: The Story of June 16th arrives at the Market Theatre from Fri, Jun 5 – Sun, Jun 28, 2026. This powerful production, written and directed by acclaimed playwright Tiisetso Mashifane wa Noni, revisits one of the pivotal moments in South African history through a deeply human lens. Book your tickets here.

Created in collaboration between the Market Theatre in Johannesburg and the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town, Rise '76 blends historical fact and fiction to tell the story of a group of students at the fictional Molefe Secondary School in Soweto. As the mid-year exams loom, student leaders “Bafana Buthelezi” (played by Alex Sono) and “Kedibone Moloi” (Zilungile Mbombo) find themselves in heated confrontation with their principal, “Mr Alfie Ndlovu” (Botlhale Mahlangu), over the imposition of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction. The disagreement quickly escalates to a tragic turning point that exposes apartheid’s brutality and alters the course of history.

Rather than retelling the familiar headlines of the Soweto uprising, Wa Noni focuses on personal stories, smaller moments and overlooked perspectives that shaped the day. Drawing on archival research, first-hand interviews and lived experiences, the production asks audiences to reflect on the many voices that make up South Africa's history.

The staging brings together a talented cast including Alex Sono, Zilungile Mbombo, Botlhale Mahlangu, Deon Lotz, Mfuneli NtumbukaSbuja Dywili and Ben Albertyn. Since its premiere at the Baxter Theatre in May, the production has earned widespread praise for its emotional depth, compelling performances and fresh perspective on a story many South Africans thought they already knew.

As the Market Theatre marks its own 50th anniversary in 2026, Rise '76 serves as both a commemoration and a reminder of the role theatre has played in reflecting South Africa's journey.

Catch this powerful new work at the Market Theatre from Fri, Jun 5 – Sun, Jun 28, 2026, including special Youth Day performances and commemorative events. Tickets are R140 – R220 per person, with discounts available for previews, groups and school bookings.
