Samurai Farai: 'Masks of Modernity' at Origin Art
Nov 7 - Feb 1 2025
19 Keyes Avenue, Rosebank
In the solo show Masks of Modernity at Origin Art, Samurai Farai explores his dual heritage – both Zimbabwean and Afrikaans – to uncover the complexities of hybridisation and cultural legacy. A poignant theme in a country like South Africa, where these kinds of dualities are part of so many of our identities.
"With a deliberate homage to ancestral ties and a heartfelt celebration of hybridity, Farai bridges the ancient and the modern by channeling inspiration from historical African civilisations such as Great Zimbabwe and Ancient Egypt. His sculptures, crafted from Zimbabwean stone in reverence to the Shona’s masterful sculpting traditions, breathe life into his paintings’ characters, embodying them in three-dimensional form. Each piece stands as a testament to the belief that spirit resides within form, awaiting revelation – a belief echoed in the artist’s own journey toward self-identity," reads an excerpt from the curatorial statement.
Masks of Modernity opens at Origin Art as part of Keyes Art Night, sponsored by Amex, at Keyes Art Mile on Thu, Nov 7, 2024. The show continues its run until Sat, Feb 1, 2025.
