Erarta Museum is the biggest private contemporary art museum in Russia and definitely one of its most exciting. The spectacularly restored five story building is separated into two parts – the Exhibitions Wing hosting more than 40 temporary exhibitions a year alternately focusing on painting, sculpture, video art, fashion and design, and the Museum Wing tracing the history of Russian modern art of the last 60 years. Some of the works and installations on display are truly monumental in size and will leave anyone interested in new Russian art swooning. The passionate curators are constantly updating their collection by travelling across Russia to find unknown future stars and track down old favourites from all periods and streams of the Russian contemporary movement. Currently they have more than 2,800 works so make sure you give yourself some time.
