This is a bizarre, yet brilliant idea that could only have been dreamed up in the Latvian hinterlands. This is the second Latgalian kebab shop in the world, the first having been opened in the city of Rēzekne. Yes, the small menu of cheap and tasty meat and falafel kebabs is written on the wall in this unusual dialect of Latvian and the delicious meals are served on traditional ceramic plates from that region, which can be enjoyed with a soft drink, beer, kvass (a malted rye beverage) or šmakovka (Latgalian moonshine). Unlike their supposedly more authentic Middle Eastern brethren, these čangaļi (people from Latgale) don’t skimp on the meat and aren’t afraid to add sriracha sauce to lend a little heat. Its popularity with local hipsters often makes it difficult to get a table in this all-white half-basement whose only decorations are plants in big pots on the floor or dangling from the ceiling.
