Szamotuły Castle was erected at the beginning of the 15th century by the Nałęcz–Szamotulski family. In 1513 it passed into the hands of the Górka family, who transformed it into a Renaissance residence. In 1518, a brick Halszka tower was built or reconstructed. The tower is associated with a local legend that Łukasz Górka imprisoned his wife in the tower, so that no one else could admire her beauty. Furthermore, he is said to have forced her to wear an iron mask. Today, the castle functions as a regional archaeological and ethnographic museum, as well presenting a history of the Górka family.
