Alfama

Located on a hill overlooking the Tagus River and known for its narrow streets, traditional houses and lively atmosphere, Alfama is one of the oldest and most picturesque neighbourhoods in Lisbon. It has a rich history and culture and was largely spared from the devastating earthquake of 1755, and as a result, many of its buildings and streets have remained unchanged for centuries. The neighbourhood has a strong Moorish influence, and it is thought to be the birthplace of fado, a traditional Portuguese music genre.

One of the most famous landmarks in Alfama is the Castelo de São Jorge, a castle that was built by the Moors in the 11th century and later expanded by the Portuguese. It offers stunning views of the city and the river, and is a popular tourist attraction. Other notable landmarks in the neighbourhood include the Sé Cathedral, the National Pantheon, and the Miradouro das Portas do Sol viewpoint.

Alfama is also home to a vibrant food and nightlife scene. Visitors can find many traditional restaurants and bars serving delicious Portuguese cuisine, as well as trendy cafes and nightclubs. The neighbourhood is particularly lively during the annual Santo António festival in June, which includes parades, music, and street parties.
