While Ljubljana stands as Slovenia's vibrant capital, the nation's historical heartbeat can be found in the quaint towns and picturesque countryside to the east. Pomurje, the charming region in the far northeastern part of Slovenia, is known for its scenic landscapes, rich history, and vibrant cultural traditions. Comfortably nestled close to the borders of Austria, Hungary, and Croatia, Pomurje offers a unique blend of influences, making it a fascinating area to explore.

The history of Pomurje dates back to prehistoric times, with archaeological findings indicating settlements from the Neolithic period. The region was later inhabited by Celts and Romans, who left behind numerous artefacts. During the mediaeval period, Pomurje was part of the Hungarian Kingdom and the Habsburg Monarchy. This historical backdrop has given Pomurje a distinct identity within Slovenia, characterised by diverse architectural styles and cultural influences.

The town of Murska Sobota is the region's administrative centre and boasts a beautiful Renaissance-style castle that now houses the Pomurje Museum. This museum offers insights into the region's history, culture, and ethnography. To the north is the village of Grad, another notable destination and home to the largest castle in Slovenia with a whopping 365 rooms - one for each day of the year! The castle's history dates back to the 12th century and visitors can also enjoy the stunning park that surrounds it.

Pomurje offers nature enthusiasts no end of activities. The region is crisscrossed by hiking and cycling trails that meander through its scenic countryside, vineyards, and alongside the Mura River. There are also popular thermal spas, such as those in Moravske Toplice and Radenci offering a wide range of wellness treatments, making them perfect for relaxation and rejuvenation.

This far-flung corner of Slovenia is often overlooked by more popular places and tourist attractions. But, those who venture over to the east side can enjoy a wealth of experiences that highlight the region's charm and heritage. From stunning natural landscapes, exquisite gastronomy, historical sites, unique local traditions, and so much more - it’s all here waiting for you!
