Unveiled in 1969 and designed by Wawrzyniec Samp and Wieslaw Pietron, this huge stone monument depicts an axe stuck in the ground and commemorates all those who gave their lives throughout the centuries (from the 1308 Gdańsk massacre to WWII) trying to maintain the Polish identity of Gdańsk.
