The virtues of Peace, Freedom, Wealth, Fame, Piety, Justice and Concord are depicted in allegorical statues adorning the balustrade of this gate overlooking ul. Długa. Designed by Flemish architect Abraham van den Blocke, it was built between 1642-44, later destroyed during WWII and not restored until 1997. An late inscription on the gate translates into English as:
“Small states grow by concord, great ones fall by disagreement.”
Within the Golden Gate arches, you can see archival photos on the placards, showing a largely-destroyed Gdańsk Old Town in 1945. As you walk through the gate, you are now on ul. Długa (Long Street) - the heart of Gdańsk Old Town.
