Seizing its opportunity while Poznań's Old Town Market Square was being renovated, Plac Wolności has now established itself as the preferred plac for the city's Christmas holiday festivities - a responsibility it splits with the Poznań International Fair, which hosts a second, even-larger holiday market. The more centrally-located of the two, Plac Wolności's market is a bit smaller and also more atmospheric, though it does get very crowded. In addition to market stalls selling holiday gifts, decorations and handicrafts, as well as hot food, sweets and spiced wine, the Christmas market features a towering Ferris wheel (which dates all the way back to 1946 and is ideal for taking aerial photos of the market), a small whirligig ride and a cultural stage with performances throughout the season. This Christmas market also runs for longer than any other in Poland, opening in mid-November and lasting well into the New Year. A wonderful place to experience the sights, smells and tastes of the season, as well as do some Christmas shopping, or just feel the festive vibes.
