Constructed in 1848 and closely controlled by the Ottomans who initially insisted that all religious services were conducted inside the building in the Greek language, the successful campaign by the Macedonians for religious and linguistic freedom came to a brutal end with the First World War when the building found itself on the front line and was subsequently shelled into a state of near ruin in 1916. A century later, this fine old church overlooking the lake was the recipient of a large grant to restore it to its original splendour, a project that’s still got a long way to go before completion. Although much work’s already been carried out and it’s now possible to go inside, there’s nothing to see at the moment with the exception of a couple of makeshift shrines on tables. Find it hidden behind a group of trees on the small hill on the right as you enter Star Dojran.
