This typical polder windmill was built in 1674 along the Haarlemmerweg about 2km northeast of its current location next to the Ookmeer sports fields. The name 1100 Roe actually refers to its former location at 1100 Roes (an old unit of length) from the Haarlemmerpoort. In the 1950s, the Ookmeer Lake was reclaimed and many of Amsterdam’s sports clubs moved to the newly created polder. The octagonal windmill was moved to this location in 1965 as well, to help pump water and to keep the football fields dry. Unfortunately, the picturesque windmill can only be admired from the outside as it is currently inhabited and therefore closed to the public.
