Must-Visit Attractions in Brussels

more than a year ago
The capital of Belgium is a place full of surprises and interesting sights. From fascinating architecture to charming parks and monuments, there’s always something new and exciting that you don’t want to miss. Brussels welcomes visitors of all ages with stories always ready to be discovered, whether you're stopping by the Grand-Place or having fun at a museum. If you’re visiting the city in a hurry or simply don’t know where to go first, we recommend visiting these five must see attractions first.

Grand Place

Considered one of the most beautiful places in the world, Grand Place is an enchanting square worth visiting both by day and by night. The city's main plaza is located right in the heart of Brussels Old Town and it is known for its decorative and aesthetic wealth, its architecture being from eras of Baroque, Gothic and Louis XIV. Grand Place is surrounded with small museums, many sweets shops and restaurants and is always packed with people looking to take a great picture. It is definitely a must see and the most wonderful sight of Brussels!

Atomium

If you're looking for a fascinating experience, the Atomium is visually impressive inside and out. Being the most popular tourist attraction of Europe’s Capital and a great picture spot, this iconic landmark was built in 1958 for the Brussels World's Fair and today offers you a surrealistic walk through tubes and spheres. The nine spheres represent an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times, each sphere being about the size of a large apartment. Of course, you have to take the elevator to the top because there you'll find a restaurant with the most beautiful panorama over Brussels and its surroundings. Be sure not to miss the permanent exhibition about the history of the building and the temporary exhibitions, along with the boutique full of original gifts!

Mannekin Pis

This great statue has become the symbol of Brussels as well as the most visited landmark in the city. The bronze fountain features a naked little boy nicknamed "Brussel's Oldest Citizen", but you'll come to find that the little fellow is not in fact always naked. The locals dress him while celebrating many events of the year and he has over 900 costumes that visitors can view at the City Museum. This funny statue can be found just a few streets from the Grand Place and you'll surely want to take a picture when you find it!

Mini-Europe

Mini-Europe is a great stop for you, if you're looking for a fun outdoor activity! This entertaining park is the only place where you can visit the whole of Belgium and have a tour of Europe in just a few short hours. Great for kids and miniatures lovers, here you’ll find 350 well designed models and sites and a few interactive multimedia games along with the “Spirit of Europe” exhibition at the end, all of them located right in the shadow of the Atomium. Seeing the eruption of Vesuvius, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Big Ben is definitely worth the visit!

Saint-Michel Cathedral

Very close to the city centre you can find the main Catholic Church in Belgium, one of the most important monuments in Brussels. This truly breathtaking cathedral is dedicated to the patron saints of Brussels - St. Michael and St. Gudula and was built in a Gothic style at the beginning of the thirteenth century. Its architecture is interesting inside and out: the impressive facade is crowned with twin 69-meter-high towers and in the chapel there are several stained glass windows dating from 1540. You can visit the Saint-Michel Cathedral from early in the morning until late in the evening and there's even a small park and benches besides to sit and see the beautiful view.
