Banj Brdo looms large above Banja Luka, and the Monument to Fallen Krajina Soldiers is its main event. Standing 13 metres high and stretching 24 metres long, this concrete creation commemorates the many lives lost in the fight against fascism, a story that is told all the way around the monument. It was opened in 1961 and its position is not merely coincidental — it was placed here so as to be visible to anyone entering the city down below, a stark reminder of what legions of young men and women fought so hard for in the 1940s. Tito himself referred to it as the ‘greatest monument in Yugoslavia’, and who are we to argue with Josip Broz himself?
