The house that once belonged to the operatic tenor Kipras Petrauskas (1885-1968) and his composer brother Mikas (1873-1937) where the singer lived with his actress wife Elena Žalinkevičaitė-Petrauskienė (1900-1986) is worth visiting for at least two reasons. First, it provides an insight into the world of Lithuanian high culture destroyed by Stalin and the 50-year creative vacuum he forced on the country. Second, it was inside this building that Kipras and Elena hid a baby girl by the name of Dana Pomeranz/Danutė Pomerancaitė who was smuggled out of the Kovno Ghetto in 1942, an act for which the couple were posthumously awarded the title of Righteous Among the Nations 57 years later. As fascinating as the family's life was, it’s a shame that their most heroic and inspiring performance of all barely gets a mention amongst the museum’s many exhibits.
