Best Pizza in Ljubljana Old Town

Having Italy as a neighbour it’s no surprise that many Italian-influenced foods can be found on Slovenian menus, none more so than the trusty pizza. Although others way back in time were already adding toppings to their flatbreads, it was the Italians that came up with the superb idea of adding the toppings before they went into the oven. Fast-forward to the 18th century and a tomato topping had been introduced, much to the disgust of some who believed that tomatoes were poisonous. Deemed a poor man's food, many shops refused to sell these strange round breads, until King Umberto I and Queen Margherita paid a visit. If the legend is true, Raffaele Esposito worked his magic on the royal couple, who wanted a change from their usual French cuisine and to try something local to the area. After sampling a few different slices, Queen Margherita chose her favourite and hence the Margherita pizza was born.

Toppings may have changed over the years, and some are still as questionable as those first tomatoes, but whatever you choose to go on yours, it’s sure to put a smile on your face.

Verace Pizzeria

While Ljubljana has no shortage of pizza places, Verace stands out with its focus on the Neapolitan variety. The secret to this is said to be the long resting time of the dough, and the short, high-temperature baking that traps air bubbles and keeps the base soft. For traditionalists we recommend the simple Margherita and Marinara pies, but the menu also includes a list of well thought-out toppings to satisfy all tastes, as well as craft beers and wines to keep things flowing. Read more...

Pops Place Pizza

With the opening of Pop's Pizza Place, it appears as if pizza - or more specifically Naples' famed Neapolitan style pizza - has officially become the new burger. The same culinary dream team behind Ljubljana's favourite gourmet burger and craft beer establishment has brought their know-how to the pizza trade, melding gourmet Neapolitan pizza with Brooklyn style in a gorgeous location at the corner of Breg and Novi Trg in the old town. What exactly is this Neapolitan pizza that's all the rage these days? Like most Italian cuisine, the secret lies in its simplicity and top quality ingredients. Read more...

Pizzeria Osmica

Located on the pedestrian street that runs parallel to Čopova, Osmica is essentially the pizza annex of the longer-running Allegria in the courtyard around the corner. The menu boasts over two dozen pizzas, and several choice of salad, lasagne and tortillas are also on offer in the comfortable rustic setting - think lots of wood and exposed stone with an open kitchen. Read more...

Magnificently decorated once you’re through the slightly out of place automatic doors, with autumn leaves painted on the vaulted ceilings and red, yellow and orange plates built into the roof of the large wood-fired pizza oven, the large and busy Foculus specialises in 66 varieties of pizza, including 20 for vegetarians and eight with seafood. The salads are also particularly good, although be warned that the place can get rather hectic in the evenings, so don’t be surprised if you have to wait a few minutes for a table. Read more...
