Only a short drive from Ljubljana, this family-run restaurant with more than a century and a half of tradition offers an unbeatable combination of excellent modern Slovene cuisine and genuine rural hospitality. Most of the ingredients are not only organic and locally-sourced, but come from the family's own farm or from their neighbours, a fact which led to Mihovec being one of the original members recognised under the Gostilna Slovenia brand. Opened in the village of the same name just north of Ljubljana by Slavko Žagar Sr back in 1975, to this day Skaručna has the reputation of satisfying each and every guest, which goes far beyond what is on the plates and in the glasses. The owner, Slavko Žagar Jr, is a jolly fellow and exceptional host, but also takes his cuisine very seriously. Fresh ingredients come directly from the nearby fields and forests, and even the wood that fires the open-air barbecue is carefully selected. Read more...
A special intuitive attachment exists in an individual towards home cooking. Creating this kind of atmosphere in a public space takes some work, but Gostilna Pr’ Kopač in Brezovica has managed just that. The continually evolving family enterprise has taken what was happening in its kitchen into the public, and the results are clear to see. Traditional Slovene cuisine is the order of the day, with a very affordable a la carte menu to boot. Read more...
Located in the village of Vrhpolje just a short walk outside of Kamnik, Gostilna Repnik is a special, special place. This part of the world is famed for hospitality, and Repnik stands out as a venue taking this to new heights. The staff are simply beyond excellent, welcoming and passionate about the food they serve without being overbearing. And the food? Wow. The focus is on traditional Slovene fare in the most genuine of ways, complete with a fine selection of wines to compliment every meal. Read more...
Since 1974, the restaurant on top of Šmarna Gora has been serving happy hikers who have reached the summit. The most famous dish here is the rice-based Ričet, which is not unlike risotto. Otherwise, all of the best homemade Slovenian classics can also be had: jota, kranjska klobasa, beef soup, mushroom soup and roast pork with potatoes (some only available at the weekends). Our personal favourite in the summer, though, is the sour milk with buckwheat and bread to dip - you can't get more rustic Slovenian than that. Of course, even just a beer while reclining on sun lounger overlooking Ljubljana might well suffice. Read more...

Dating back to the late 18th century, Pri Poku is officially one of the oldest restaurants in Ljubljana, and perfectly combines its over 200 years of tradition with all the modern comforts and service that one would expect from a top-end restaurant in the 21st century. Guests are pampered with a varied seasonal cuisine, which - like Pri Poku itself - combine age-old family recipes with modern tastes, and an emphasis on fresh, home-grown organic ingredients. To get there you can either take a brief trip on the motorway to the Brezovica exit, or simply follow Tržaška Cesta a few kilometres southwest of the city. Read more...
Gostilna Pri Kuklju has stood in the heart of Velike Lašče since the mid 1700s. You’ll be greeted with a warm welcome by the family and staff, where you can relax in the comfortable and homely environment and enjoy some of the finest traditional cuisine around. Over at the adjoining shop you’ll find a fine selection of home baked cakes, donuts and their somewhat legendary potica. Read more...
Hearty, home cooking goes hand in hand with the warm and friendly atmosphere you can enjoy at this family-run gostilna. The inn itself dates back to 1866 and was perfectly placed to greet weary travellers in need of refreshments, which the last three generations of the Dobnikar family have been doing for almost a hundred years. The beautiful outside terrace overlooks the mountains and makes the perfect backdrop to weddings, birthday celebrations, and picnic events. Read more...
