In addition to being the political, economic and cultural capital of the country, Ljubljana is also a student town, with the University of Ljubljana alone having some 40,000 enrolled students, meaning that the party scene is a notch or two more lively than might be expected, and the vast majority of bars and clubs are conveniently located in the city centre. A good place to start exploring Ljubljana's nightlife is our annual Best Nightlife in Ljubljana competition, in which locals have voted for their favourite bars, pubs, clubs, lounges, wine bars and more since 2010, while the former army barracks now known as Metelkova City is one of the most famous alternative nightlife destinations in Europe (think Copenhagen's Christiania in miniature), and definitely worth checking out at least once. One peculiarity is that many students leave for the weekend, so younger revellers will want to head out on Wednesday or Thursday night if they want to meet locals.
