Onno is exactly the kind of place we picture when we hear the word 'bistro', which is to say rickety wooden chairs, lovely tile floors, dim lightning – nice, but nothing fancy. In short, the perfect place to dine on Bardaro's leafy, main street, especially if you can get a table out on the terrace. When it comes to ordering, don't even think about getting a dish just for yourself, there are so many delectable items on the menu that sharing with a few friends is really a must, starting with the Manti (dumplings), Sawdet Dajaj (chicken liver) and Havgitov Basterma (cured Armenian beef with quail eggs). The service is friendly if not the fastest, but Onno is the kind of place you want to linger anyway, so it doesn't really matter. Accurately self-described as 'the worst kept secret in the city', they've now got three restaurants in Beirut – the Bourj Hammoud original (opening in 1985), the newest in Hamra and our favourite in Badaro.
