It's no big secret that a good deal in Beirut is about about as rare as a Star of David tattoo, which is why you might think you've misread or misheard the prices when you first visit one of the Bachir's two dozen or so Beirut branches. But nope, 5000 LL (or $3.33) will get you a huge cup with scoops of up to eight different flavours – or just pile on your favourite, like we do with pistachio. While ice cream aficionados and gelato connoisseurs might not be overly impressed by the stuff, which is thicker (some would even say chewy) Arabic-style ice cream known as 'bouza', the only complaint anyone else will have is brain freeze. The place is also a Lebanese institution, with the first shop opened by two brothers all way back in 1936. You'll find the large Achrafieh branch down the hill to the east of Sassine Square, but with so many locations you're never too far from one.
