Launching the reopening of the Soweto Theatre's Jabulani Amphitheatre, the Soweto Heritage Festival promises to be a joyous exploration of South Africa's myriad traditional music and dance styles.

Celebrate National Heritage Day and come dressed in your finest traditional attire and enjoy the dance showcases at the Traditional Dance competition which takes place all weekend and includes popular traditional dance styles such as sepata and kgabosereto .

There's also some great local live music to enjoy including maskandi, marabi, mbaqanga and traditional isicathamiya sounds, plenty of food and drink on offer at the popular 7 Colours Soweto Food market, a beer garden and a kids’ zone.

The Jabulani Amphitheatre was built in 1952, and was one of the few leisure facilities in Soweto during the Apartheid era. It was the venue for jazz festivals which gave rise to the Soweto National Jazz festival in the 1970s and in the 1980s became a popular venue for maskandi, isicathamiya and gospel concerts headlined by local music icons like Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse, Blondie Makhene and Rebecca Malope.
