Isandlwana Lecture: The Musical
Friday Jan 21 - Sunday Jan 23
163 Civic Blvd, Braamfontein
Khoza and the ensemble interpret Amahubo, ancient African songs traditionally sung by Abanguni griots and composers that capture historically significant moments that future generations can learn from. Khoza describes these songs as essentially a kind of 'time capsule' that captures the emotions and issues that faced southern African communities in the 17th, 18th and 19th Centuries.
These Amahubo form the basis for revisiting the Anglo-Zulu Wars of the late 19th Century, particularly the Battle of Isandlwana which took place on January 22 1879, with the British suffering one of their biggest defeats on African soil.
For the past four years, every year on the anniversary of the Battle of Isandlwana, Khoza has led a talented acapella group of 16 young voices who were taught the art of singing and interpreting the amahubo by Khoza's organisation. A stirring evening of music and performance that calls back to the epic battles from more than 100 years ago.
