The historic Hotel Astoria is very conveniently located in the heart of Pest, a fact which must have greatly attracted its notorious former residents. The Gestapo made it their headquarters, as did the Soviets during the 1956 revolution and it is easy to see why. The low lit reception and café are ornately furnished and decorated with marble statuettes giving it an air of exclusivity. There are reasonably sized double rooms, executive suites and large apartments - those which have already been refurbished are comfortable and air conditioned.

This is a great place to experience both the look and feel of a pre-1914 European grand hotel and it's a must-see for nostalgics. The Astoria's public rooms have remained virtually untouched by time [having been preserved rather than renovated]. A little slice of Austro-Hungarian splendour preserved in aspic. Although not staying in the hotel, I had a great value lunch in the recently re-launched Mirror Café. A creamy fish soup was followed by a paprika beef stew with parsley potatoes and pickles, all washed down with a glass of house wine and a bottle of sparkling water for around £15.00. The service was formal and attentive without being stuffy. A highly recommended taste of a more civilised age. Superb.
