This is truly like nothing you've seen before. The acclaimed science-meets-art production Hidden Giants by the Universe on Stage returns to the Joburg Theatre. A collaboration between physicist Dr Luca Pontiggia and award-winning composer Yasheen Modi merges scientific discovery with captivating sound, visuals, and storytelling. "Science becomes poetry when experienced through music, sound, and vision," says Dr Pontiggia. 

"Where Black Holes Meet Human Curiosity" is the theme for this year's show. According to NASA's definition, "Black holes are among the most mysterious cosmic objects, much studied but not fully understood. These objects aren’t really holes. They’re huge concentrations of matter packed into very tiny spaces. A black hole is so dense that gravity just beneath its surface, the event horizon, is strong enough that nothing – not even light – can escape. The event horizon isn’t a surface like Earth’s or even the Sun’s. It’s a boundary that contains all the matter that makes up the black hole." 

For returning fans, this season introduces three fresh elements that take the experience to new heights: state-of-the-art sound design by The Audioroom, a live violin performance by Siobhan Lloyd-Jones, and cinematic visuals by Darius Botha. Together, these make for a more immersive experience than ever before. 

After watching the 2024 production, science teacher Tyra Mouron said, "[The Universe on Stage] masterfully combines truth and beauty that fills the heart with wonder at the magnificence of the galaxy we live in. The interaction between Luca’s speaking and Yash’s piano reflect the very dance between the truths of the universe and the sheer beauty of it all."
