Perched high above the city on the famous Crkvina Hill, Hercegovačka Gračanica is an absolute beaut. Completed in the year 2000, this Serbian Orthodox monastery was intended to mimic the one in Gračanica, itself one of the most important of all Serbian monasteries, and it more than does the job. The Trebinje monastery is the final resting place of Jovan Dučić, Trebinje’s favourite son, and the prodigious writer takes his pride of place on a fresco above his tombstone. The monastery somehow manages to be cute and imposing all at the same time, and the views from outside are as good as it gets.
