Works on Paper at the gallery (an offshoot of the atelier at 44 Stanley) is all about the dynamic, wonderfully personal relationship between the artist, the medium, and the surface. Stephen Allwright, Deborah Bell, Vanessa Cowling, Sam Kentridge, Balekane Legoabe, Janet Mbirimi, and Mongezi Ncaphayi join in this exploration.
"Each artist has a unique connection with their chosen surface, particularly with paper – one of the most unassuming and universal foundations for creating," reads the curatorial statement. From tissues to disposable containers, bags, and newspapers, we encounter paper daily in various forms. When it's used for the purposes of art, however, paper becomes more than an ephemeral, throwaway object. "It's a repository for ideas, a place for transitions, and even a symbol of absence."
The enduring medium of paper is a space for contemplation and a tool for expression. Stories, histories, and dreams are all transmitted in this way. "Despite their varied approaches, all the artists in this exhibition share a common thread: the use of paper to record experiences," says the exhibition text.
