Through Form and Meaning is a group exhibition that explores the role of materiality in the aesthetic experience. Featuring works that question traditional boundaries in art, the exhibition is open from Sat, Feb 8 – Sun, Apr 6, 2025, at Berman Contemporary on the top floor of 223 Jan Smuts Creative Hub

The world we find ourselves in is one that is characterised by perceptions and narratives that are in constant flux, and this influences our engagement with the material world through the aesthetic experience. Curated by Kamogelo Walaza for Berman ContemporaryThrough Form and Meaning encourages us to consider the materiality of art not as static, but as a "living extension of the human condition".

The exhibition statement reads: "Through a curated selection of works we explore how the fragility of their art-making is not just about substance but time, perception, and the human experience. The use of textual elements, ceramic, paper, wool, stone, and architectural forms highlight how fragility and language serve as more than mere mediums; they are dynamic participants in the dialogue between the viewer and the viewed. These facets become an invitation to see how the selected works inform, influence, and interact as a sensory experience."

Featuring work by five artists in Berman's stable, namely Amogelang MaepaChrisél Attewell, DuduBloom More, Mellaney Roberts, and Odette Graskie, the exhibition challenges the traditional boundaries of making, thinking about, and engaging with art.

Through Form and Meaning shows at 223 Jan Smuts Creative Hub from Sat, Feb 8 – Sun, Apr 6. The formal opening is on Sat, Apr 1 from 11:00 – 16:30.
