Derived from the Sesotho word for 'we are', Ke Rona is a group exhibition with Afro-surrealism at its core, comprising a collection of staged and unstaged photographs that tread the line between truth and suggestion. Open from Sat, Feb 8 – Sun, Apr 6, 2025, at Berman Contemporary at 223 Jan Smuts Creative Hub

Afro-surrealism is defined as "the creative ability of the mind that allows us to reinterpret, reorganise, and recreate our experiences, or even to create new, imagined ones that are dependent on our own past or present experiences". This line of thinking forms the foundation for Ke Rona, a group exhibition curated by Kamogelo Walaza for Berman Contemporary (on the upper level of 223 Creative Hub). Four photographic artists in the gallery's stable have work on show: Hazel Mpande, Lebogang Tlhako, Remofiloe Mayisela, and Thalente Khomo.

Rooted in black cultural aesthetics, Ke Rona presents the wide reach of Afro-surrealism in modern and contemporary photography. From the curatorial statement: "Although these photographic images are rooted in and rely on reality to some extent, they also often present us with imagined situations, imagined black lives, and the world in many possible reimagined ways. Some of the images do so by virtue of being staged, but unstaged cityscapes or even street photographs also often invite us to follow the imagination of the photographer to explore new aspects and depths of the world that are not easily available to the unreflecting eye."

Ke Rona shows at Berman Contemporary at 223 Creative Hub from Sat, Feb 8 – Sun, Apr 6. A formal opening takes place on Sat, Apr 1 from 11:00 – 16:30.
