Believe it or not, old towns haven't always been the cute, picture postcard destinations that they are today. Before WII, the old town in Hanover wasn't so old as it is today, and had a reputation as a slum area full of bad people and seedy characters. Heavily bombed during WWII Hanover's old town, which used to stand more or less between today's Steintor to Aegidientorplatz, was rebuilt using what was left of the original buildings in the area around Knochenhauerstr., Kramerstr. and Burgstr, of which the latter features by far the loveliest of the lot, with some fine examples of rich merchant houses from the 14th century onwards.
