Gorgeous Galway
Galway, also known as stone city, borrows its name from the old name of Corrib, the second largest river in Ireland, running from the Lough Corrib and spilling into the North Atlantic at Galway bay. Stones pave the streets and houses of this City of Tribes, where 14 families undertook states of affairs in the 15th century and take responsibility for many examples of its beautiful historical architecture.
Follow the winding streets of the city’s oldest quarter to find historical landmarks and religious sites surrounded by the new and modern, to the soundtrack of street buskers and busy passersby. From arts and crafts to churches and pubs, all is in one way or another blending historical legends adapted to present day life, but all centred around quality social life.
Seafood will prevail the plates, craft beer the kegs and intimate music sessions with the proud and talented will keep you at awe. Whether you’ve come to see the city, visit a friend, check out the renowned Galway Arts Festival, or are just stopping by on your Wild Atlantic Way trail, do stop by and take in the magic of a place that has been crowned the Capital of Culture 2020, sharing the title with the no less impressive Rijeka in Croatia. Head down to one of the best pubs preserving the impressive nightlife scene for a pint of the Galway Hooker and pay tribute to the red sailed boat that symbolises the city and the liquid that symbolises the soul.
