If you’re looking for reasons to visit Brasov or you’re simply curious about the hidden stories behind some of the most visited spots in the city, here are five interesting facts about Brasov that you may not have heard of.
The Black Church
If you’re visiting Brasov, The Black Church in the city center is probably on your sightseeing list. This iconic historical monument is the most important Gothic church in the country and one of the biggest medieval churches from this part of Europe. What’s interesting about it is that it has the biggest bell in the country and also one of the biggest mechanical organs in Romania, alongside the richest collection of Anatolian carpets in all Europe.
The church got its name after a fire partially destroyed it in 1689, leaving the walks black from the smoke. The restoration lasted almost 100 years and only a wooden plate survived from the original structure.
Rope Street
Strada Sforii (Rope Street) is one of the most visited attraction in Brasov because it’s believed to be one of the narrowest streets in Europe. The street is 80 meters long and its width varies between 111 and 135 centimeters. Situated near the city center, it was built as a corridor that firemen could use in the 17th century and today is a popular meeting spot and also one of the most photographed sights in Brasov.
First Romanian School
If you’re curious about the first school in the territory of present-day Romania where the first Romanian-language classes were held, this is the place you need to visit. This small museum has lots of interesting things to see, like the oldest letter ever written in Romanian using the Latin alphabet, the oldest Romanian bible, the first Romanian schoolbook and even the first Romanian printing press. This is definitely a must-see place if history is your thing!
The iconic Brasov sign
One of the first things you’ll notice once you’re in Brasov’s old town is the iconic Brasov sign reminiscent of the Hollywood sign. Brasov and Rasnov both have their Hollywood-esque signs, and you can easily reach the one in Brasov by taking a hiking trail up the mountain or by taking a cable car. Once you reach the sign, the view from the top is incredible and you can also take some nice pictures that will make you feel like you’re on the set of a movie.
“Dracula’s” castle
When visiting Brasov, one of the things you don’t want to miss is the famous Bran Castle situated half an hour away from Brasov by car. A visit to this castle is the perfect opportunity to see the inspiration behind Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula and get to experience a place once-known and viewed with fear and respect, the home of the infamous Count "Dracula" Tepes. While lots of stories and legends of horror were born from this place, rest easy, the only thing you will experience here is the amazing and rich history protected and kept in its fortress walls. And while you're at it, you can also experience the core Romanian cuisine in the Royal Court itself, at the Tea House Restaurant.
