Housed in one of the city's most iconic landmarks—the former cathedral in the heart of town—this contemporary museum explores the history of the cathedral itself, as well as the history of the university and the city. Spread across seven floors, it offers engaging exhibitions and breathtaking interior views, inviting both adults and children to experience the joy of discovery.
The museum’s permanent exhibition, 'The University of Our Lives', traces the story of the University of Tartu from its founding in 1632 to the present day. One highlight is a partially preserved historic library, which served the university for over 175 years within the cathedral walls. The second exhibition 'The Cathedral’s Chamber of Mysteries', delves into the cathedral’s past and unveils some of its long-held secrets. In the Parrot’s Physics Lab, visitors can explore optics and colour theory, while the Crazy Scientist’s Office, filled with hands-on exhibits and interactive fun, promises to delight younger guests.
The museum also features temporary exhibitions. One such display, 'Invisible City: 800 Years of the City of Tartu', takes visitors back to the medieval times, focusing on the events that shaped the city’s founding, its appearance, and the lives of its earliest inhabitants.
From May through September, the same ticket grants access to the cathedral towers, where visitors can enjoy stunning views over the city.
