There's no better way to experience the lifestyle of the Russian Old Believers than by staying at the traditional cottage located in their cultural realm near Lake Peipsi. This cottage is a true representation of the traditional way of life, with no running water but a real smoke sauna and authentic items, down to the spoons. For the even more adventurous, you can opt to stay in one of the boat houses - one even comes with sauna!
Now if you're one for sauna - Mesi Tare has five of them to rent. The authentic smoke sauna offers a unique experience. They also have a tent sauna, a plastic wrap sauna and a Finnish sauna, as well as a hot tub.
And that’s not all! They organise tours on Lake Peipus throughout the year, and the winter tour includes a ride powered by the traditional “karakatitsa”, a type of vehicle with two or more wheels used to move around on the ice of Lake Peipus and locate optimal fishing locations. These vehicles are custom-made by local fishermen.
The hostess of Mesi Tare also runs Samovar House, which has a collection of over 200 samovars from Russia and other countries, as well as souvenirs and other items related to samovars. Visitors can learn about the importance of these unique tea pots in Slavic culture and the Old Believers’ culture. The site also offers authentic samovar tea as part of a tea ceremony, which is an experience not to be missed.
