The international nature of this most international city means traditional British food often gets overlooked in favour of modern day mixing, as culinary choices collide in search of new flavours. That isn’t to say British food is nowhere to be seen — quite the opposite in fact. Liverpool has some great traditional eating spots that will shine a light on the proud (more proud than is largely understood) history of English cooking.
A quality restaurant befitting of the immense elegance of the Georgian Quarter in which it is located, The Art School Restaurant has taken pride of place at the top table of Liverpool restaurants since the big green door was opened in 2014. The building itself is worth a mention, an old Victorian beaut that was once a ‘Home for Destitute Children’, but the modern day focus is on fantastic food and fantastic food alone. There are three menus on offer, each of which provide traditional British cuisine with a stylish twist.
Self-styled as a ‘good and proper place’, George’s Great British Kitchen has become something of an institution in the north of England. Personality is everything here, although that personality is intensely flavoured with some of the freshest ingredients in the city, and you won’t find a better selection of fish and chips in the country. Two thumbs up.
An award-winning gastropub on Duke Street, The Monro is the sort of place that Britain does very, very well. A city centre location certainly helps, but the relaxed atmosphere and friendly service makes this a great choice no matter the desire, be it a quiet pint with friends or more traditional British food than your stomach can take. Pub classics fill the menu, and we do mean ‘fill’.
From the immensely talented mind and fingers of Anton Piotrowski comes Röski, a celebration of all that makes modern Britain great focused through a professional kitchen. You’d expect quality from a Masterchef winner and that’s what we get, with new takes on old classics filling the menu from starters to desserts. It isn’t cheap, but it is fantastic. Reservations are mandatory, so don’t just turn up expecting some grub.
Found in the elegant surroundings of Hope Street Hotel (a fine wedding venue, to say the least), The London Carriage Works remains one of the most exquisite traditional restaurants in Liverpool. Awards flock to this place almost as frequently as customers, the latter of which inevitably leave with expectations fulfilled and appetites appeased. The menu covers traditional British ground, with a selection of meat dishes and vegetarian options available. The Sunday roasts are great.
