Leeds is unlike anywhere else in the United Kingdom, a proud standard-bearer for Yorkshire and everything God’s own country is, was and forever will be. There are plenty of stereotypes up here as a result, many of which manifest themselves in some quite entertaining souvenirs, if we’re being honest. These are our favourite Leeds mementos, including rhinos, slang, booze and the rest.
Yorkshire Tea
You’re going to encounter lots of this stuff up north. Tea is to the people of Yorkshire what breathing is to everyone else, a constant in life that provides happiness in times of sadness, solace in times of grief, advice when advice is needed and an embrace when all seems lost. Tea is a way of life up here, an understatement and then some, and there is no better way to take a little bit of Yorkshire home with you than by picking up some Yorkshire Tea to take home.
Yorkshire Parkin
Yes, Yorkshire is one of those places that insists on having its name in front of all its products. That’s pride, baby! Yorkshire parkin is the beloved dessert of choice around here, or at least it was before artisanal gelato entered the scene, and this wintertime joy is a great edible choice to take back with you. Butter, treacle, syrup and ginger combine to make God’s own flapjack.
Sporting Merchandise
Leeds is one of the great sporting cities of England, one that straddles a number of sports without really putting all of its eggs in one basket. The Leeds Rhinos have stumbled a little in the last couple of years but the rugby league side are one of the nation’s most successful, and a rhino makes for a pretty great mascot. The cricket club also sell some great merchandise — much of which celebrates that famous 1981 Ashes test. 500-1 indeed!
Yorkshire Dialect Tea Towel
You’re going to drink a lot of tea, so why not get yourself a Yorkshire dialect tea towel to go with it? JollySmith sell a decent one, covered in phrases that are commonplace up north but absolutely foreign everywhere else. It’s neither nowt nor summat, that’s for sure.
Ale
They drink plenty of ale up north, and the history of Yorkshire beer is as proud as it is long. The craft beer revolution really kicked into gear up here as well, with the opposing worlds of tradition and invention coming together with marvellous results. Pick up a bottle of bitter or something modern and wacky, your choice, and the Tall Boys Beer Yard is a great place to do so.
