Liverpool is an action-packed adventure city for visitors of all ages, with colour on every corner and excitement at every turn. Almost every museum caters for young ones in some way or another, but some certainly do this better than others. These are our top five things to do with adolescent visitors to Scouseland.
These are good times to be a fan of Liverpool FC. After a couple of decades away from the top table of English football, the appointment of Jurgen Klopp has seen the side ride the crest of a wave in becoming the only real opposition to the riches of Manchester City. Even during the dry years, Anfield was one of the most beloved football stadiums in the country, and a visit is a veritable rite of passage for anyone in love with the beautiful game, even better if you can take in a match and enjoy it from the near religious experience that is the Kop. Tours of the famous stadium are available on match and non-match days.
A safari park in the middle of Merseyside? Why not. Knowsley Safari Park is located just 11miles east of Liverpool and makes for a great family day out, especially for the young ones, with many mighty beasts waiting to be admired. The park trail covers five miles and includes tigers, lions, camels, giraffes and a whole lot more. Discounted tickets are available online.
Best way to describe the World Museum in Liverpool? Individual words don’t do it justice, but if forced at gunpoint we are going to go with ‘voluminous’. Plenty of ground is covered in what is the city’s oldest museum, a science and history hotpoint that was opened to the public way back in 1851, although at that point it was just the (considerable) personal collection of Edward Smith-Stanley, the 13th Early of Derby. This is all of the universe (not literally) under one roof, astronomy sidling up to archeology and getting to know each other in that unmistakable Scouse way. Entry is free, so you really have no excuse.
Hey, The Beatles! The Magical Mystery Tour is a fun-packed two hour tour around Liverpool that stops at all the most pertinent places in the history of the Fab Four, a tour that jumps from spot to spot in one of the most retro looking buses we’ve ever come across. Tours start at the Albert Dock. Tickets are one price for everyone over the age of two, which is a bit unfortunate really.
Yes, take a ferry, ‘cross the Mersey. A great way to get to know this endlessly fascinating city, the Mersey Ferry sightseeing experience is always a great way to immerse young ones in the magic of Liverpool. The sightseeing ferry itself is a bit on the ‘wacky’ side, all eccentric patterns and wild colour. Tickets also include free entry to the U-Boat Story exhibition in Birkenhead.
